Nominee for the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture, Mr. Awal Mohammad, has pledged to resurrect the Marine Drive project if his nomination is approved by Parliament.

The project, he said, when completed has the potential to create 56,000 jobs for the teeming youth and the many unemployed Ghanaians.

The nominee described the project as a game-changer in Ghana’s tourism sector and indicated if given the opportunity he plans to invest between US$ 8-10 billion over the next ten years to ensure it gets underway.

The Marine Drive project was a beachfront initiative of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and covers 241 acres of land stretching from the Osu Castle to the Baden Powell Center near the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

Speaking at the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Thursday 25th February 2021 during his vetting, the Minister-designate pledged to look at the details of the project again and pursue its construction.

He said, “I assure the house that I will put in the maximum to energize to make sure that the project is accelerated to create jobs for Ghanaians.

According to him, private sector participation is key to the development of such a major project hence very important to have some Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

He said, “We intend to attract the private sector from all across the world even though the intention is to give some preference to Ghanaian investors.”

“I believe this project cannot be completed without the participation of the private sector.”
