President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the citizens of Ghana to continue embracing the fundamental values outlined in the Constitution.

In his message commemorating the 2024 Constitution Day on January 7, the President emphasized the importance of democratic accountability, respect for the rule of law, human rights, and individual liberty.

Akufo-Addo stressed that these values should serve as the foundation for national development and individual prosperity.

He stressed the dual responsibility of enjoying freedom while actively contributing to the greater good of society, stating, “No society can be truly free unless its citizens embrace both liberty and duty, hard work and compassion.”

Constitution Day, a statutory public holiday in Ghana, marks the coming into effect of the 1992 Constitution and the establishment of the Fourth Republic.

The day is intended to recognize collective efforts in upholding democracy, the rule of law, and constitutional principles, emphasizing the commitment to uninterrupted constitutional order.

Reflecting on the Fourth Republic’s longevity compared to previous republics cut short by military interventions, President Akufo-Addo reiterated Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa. He called on Ghanaians to celebrate Constitution Day with a renewed commitment to maintaining the country’s enviable democratic status.

Addressing the upcoming 7 December General Election, the President emphasized the collective interest in ensuring fair and transparent polls, urging citizens to develop respect for election rules and regulations, independent of the election outcome.

Akufo-Addo stressed the significance of elections in sustaining democracies, emphasizing the sanctity of the ballot.

“In the upcoming election, like the eight preceding occasions, we will go to the polls to elect the President and my successor. No true democrat can disregard the importance of elections and the sanctity of the ballot,” he stated.
