Fishermen in four regions on the coast have appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to postpone the voter registration exercise to a later date in 2021.

The April 2020 date for the commencement of the exercise has incurred the wrath of the fishermen who contest the period will not favour them.

They indicated that this will deny many of the fisherfolk the opportunity to register and exercise their franchise in the 2020 elections and also benefit from the identity cards for business purposes.

The fishermen, from Greater Accra, Volta, Central and Western Regions addressed a news conference in Elmina in the Komenda-Edina-Egaufp-Abrem Municipality to air their grievances.

A spokesperson for the fishermen, John Quayson noted that the period for the commencement of the voter registration is the time they embark on fishing expeditions to Nigeria, Benin, Liberia, and Togo.

He appealed to the National Peace Council (NPC) to impress on the EC to rescind its decision and shift the registration to a different date in 2021.

He warned that should the NPC and the EC fail to adhere to the request, the fisherfolk will be compelled to embark on sustained demonstrations to back their demands.
