Ministerial nominee for National Security, Albert Kan Dapaah, has disclosed that the incident of 7th January dawn when fully-armed military personnel stormed the Chamber of Parliament spooked him and other colleagues.

According to him, Government officials were also alarmed that something of that sort had happened.

The incident, he said, was the reaction of an overzealous army commander who felt the commotion in the House was getting of hand and therefore attempted to quell it and restore order.

Speaking on Wednesday at the televised public sittings of the Appointments Committee, which is vetting ministerial nominees of the President Nana Akufo-Addo, the Minister-designate stated that he took the trouble to find out how the incident happened.

He said, “I posed the question to him, what order? Did you think your presence there was going to frighten the Members of Parliament, No! You are not going to frighten them.”

“Were you going to arrest them, and could you have arrested anyone? So I asked what was the motivation for you to have gone there.”

Mr. Dapaah stressed the scene was not something that should have happened and expressed gratitude that nothing untoward happened and no harm was caused to any member of the House.

He noted that going forward, such incident should not be allowed or encouraged and expressed hope it would never happen again.

Asked whether he would recommend the recalcitrant commander be sanctioned to preserve Ghana’s democracy, the Minister-designate disclosed that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) had already been tasked to investigate the matter.

According to him, if the investigation concludes that the military acted unprofessionally the appropriate action would be applied and stressed that the significance of the incident should never be underestimated.
