The vice chancellor made this observation during the 3rd innovation and career fair organized by the university at Tarkwa in the Western region.
Prof. Yao Kuma also noted that patenting is a problem in the country and called for a one-stop center to be created by the copyright office for innovators to patent their innovations for products made in the country.
The UMAT career and innovation fair was instituted to help unearth the entrepreneurial potential in the students and also to provide the platform for them to transform their study into feasible and scalable projects, to impact positively on the society and country at large.
The fair brought together engineers, researchers, students, consultants, business executives, service providers and innovators from the mining, petroleum and related disciplines. Ten teams either individuals or groups of students were selected to present their innovations to a panel of judges so select and award the best among them.
Some of the innovations presented at this year’s fair includes artificial platelets for tires, production of diesel fuel from waste sachet water plastics, detection of potential theft Application, design of 3D printer using E-waste among several other inventions which were applauded by participants.
The guest speaker Dr. Kofi Osei-Kusi who is the founder and CEO of Osei-Kusi foundation applauded UMAT for instituting the fair and called on government and industries to take advantage of the fair to support innovators in the country.
He however stated that lack of innovation has created a massive gap between developed and underdeveloped countries adding the current global and fast changing world requires everybody to be innovative.
