The Member of Parliament for Juaboso has chided the government for making a U-turn on the evacuation of Ghanaians from abroad due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The government, he said, is finally learning to be responsible following the announcement it has evacuating stranded Ghanaians from Kuwait in the Middle East.
In an interview with this portal, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, noted that the President, his ministers, and serial callers mocked the minority for proposing evacuation of Ghanaian students from China in the early days of coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan.
According to him, the government claimed to evacuate the Ghanaian students from China would have worsened Ghana’s COVID-19 case count.
He said, “The presidency and the entire government machinery bastardized us for the call and claimed had that action been taken Ghana’s COVID-19 case count would have been very serious today.”
“The government is, however, today evacuating Ghanaians from Kuwait and even outlining the protocols they will take them through including quarantine on arrival.”
Mr. Akandoh expressed satisfaction that the government is finally doing the duty it owes Ghanaians and stressed this is what is done in all jurisdictions across the world.
He said, “This is what was expected of the government during the early outbreak of the disease when we appealed to government to evacuate stranded Ghanaian students in China.”
“However, in the interest of propaganda the President himself, through his ministers and serial callers vilified us for making that proposal.”
Mr. Akandoh also raised alarm on what he said is relaxing of the contact tracing protocol following a mass resignation of contact tracers for non-payment of allowance.
This development, he warned, could spell doom for Ghana’s fight against the COVID-19.
He argued there is no excuse for not paying the contact tracers because Parliament approved so much money for the purposes of COVID-19.
He said, “We all know contact tracing has become one of the effective means of combating the disease and therefore a very worrying trend that government should respond to.”
