The Concerned Volta Youth, as they call themselves, have expressed their intense opposition to the creation of another region out of the Volta Region citing reasons I find very strange.
Whilst they ferociously decried the intent to split the region into two administrative zones, they also went outside the confines of logical reasoning to rope in the Ashanti Region in a vain hope of creating the impression that the Volta Region is being split simply because the region and its inhabitants hardly find favour in the eyes of Akans in general, and Ashantis in particular.
They contentiously assert that the Ashanti Region will not be affected by this reorganization and realignment despite the fact that it is second only to the Northern Region in terms of land size, but for some grotesque reasons, the smaller sized Volta Region is being hanged, drawn and quartered.
It is a complete fallacy on their part to believe that the Ashanti Region will be treated preferentially in this exercise! The proppsed Ahafo Region will be carved out of the Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions. The Ahafo Ano zone which has Mankranso as one of its towns, whice is in the Ashanti Region will form part of the yet-to-be created Ahafo Region. This makes their poignantly passionate assertion groundless.
Another point that cannot be left untouched is the point they forcefully make about the fact that the Volta Region is small in land size, so what is the prime motivation for the split? Perhaps, they are not privy to the incessant demands from some chiefs in the northern part of the region to have a region created for them for developmental purposes. These reorganization and realignment of regions are not being done in a vacuum. They are backed by cogent reasons.
A nagging question keeps on popping up; Are we to believe that the Volta Region is peopled by only Ewes? Are there no other ethnic groups in the region? Strangers we may be to the composition of the Volta Region in terms of ethnicity, but the little we have learnt about the region is indicative of the fact that the Volta Region is not populated by only Ewes.
I would like to believe that death had laid it’s icy hands on the mouths of the members of the Concerned Volta Youth when districts were being created haphazardly by the NDC, but seem to have been miraculously waken up from that long and protracted slumber when the New Patriotic Party proposed to birth four new regions.
In effect, the fervidly impassioned arguments being made by the Concerned Volta Youth Association are unmeritoriously illogical, and must be disregarded.
Ethnocentricism has jaundiced their senses of sound judgement, putting it mildly!
