Lawyers representing the plaintiff in the Limited voter registration case against Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), have taken the legal battle to the next level by filing a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal.

This move follows a ruling on Friday, November 24, 2023, by Justice Patricia Quansah of the High Court, which the lawyers argue was against the weight of the evidence presented during the hearing.

The case revolves around the EC’s alleged contempt for proceeding with a limited voter registration exercise despite the existence of an interlocutory injunction filed against the Commission.

The interlocutory injunction was obtained on September 8 by Ayitah Precious, a resident of Otsebleku near Afienya, who argued that the registration process would disenfranchise some applicants due to the distance to the EC’s District office.

In the notice of appeal, the lawyers express dissatisfaction with the High Court ruling and outline their grounds for appeal.

They seek various reliefs, including “an order citing the respondents for court” and “an order committing the respondents for contempt.”

Ayitah Precious obtained an injunction to prevent the voter registration exercise, emphasizing the inconvenience caused by the distance to the EC’s office.

Despite the court’s injunction, the EC proceeded with the registration, prompting Ayitah Precious to return to the High Court, seeking contempt charges against Jean Mensa and her deputies, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey.
