Facebook Fraudsters Pose As Special Assistants -Target Ministers

An Intel Report

Ministers of state and other high ranking government officials have become targets of malicious and criminal actors on Facebook.

Credible information gathered indicates that the fraudsters pose as ‘Special Assistants’ on Facebook and use their self-appointed positions to dupe unsuspecting individuals.

These criminals, according to reports received, create fake Facebook accounts for ministers of state and other prominent public officials, using their IDs or pictures.

They then pose as special assistants acting supposedly on behalf of the ministers with ‘special duties’ of procuring visas for people to travel to Canada and some European countries.

“The modus operandi of these so-called special assistants is that they call their victims using contact numbers, which they claim are given to them by their bosses (ministers) to do the transaction.

“After the call, they then ask their victims to pay GH¢2,000 for visa form with the promise that the visa will be procured without delay or fail,” a near victim told The Custodian.

The paper has learnt that this criminal activity has come to the attention of some of the ministers and who have subsequently reported the matter to the police.

Meanwhile, the paper has gleaned that the Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service is currently investigating the matter and it is on the heels of the cyber criminals.
